FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY (October 11, 2013)

FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION TO SEND $25,000 GIFTS TO FAMILIES OF THE FALLEN WHO WERE TEMPORARILY DENIED DEATH BENEFITS DUE TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Covers Service Members Deceased from Beginning of Shutdown to the Time
President Obama Signed Law Reinstating Benefits

Fisher House Foundation is sending a check in the amount of $25,000 to each of the 29 families of a service member killed in service to our nation between the dates of October 1, the start of the federal government shutdown, and October 10, when President Obama signed the measure to reinstate payment of death benefits by the Pentagon, it was announced today.

The $25,000 gifts are being made in addition to the military death benefits that had been temporarily withheld due to the shutdown, which the Pentagon is scheduled to resume soon. Earlier this week, Fisher House had worked with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) on a plan to advance the death benefit of $100,000 per service member, to make good on a promise that was going unfulfilled due to the shutdown.

“Since finding out about this terrible problem, Fisher House has stood ready to bridge the gap and pay the benefits due the families of our fallen heroes. Now that our assistance is no longer needed, we wish to recognize the families who were impacted by the shutdown,” said Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. “The response from the public during this crisis has been incredible. We wish to pass along the generosity of a grateful nation, to honor their loved ones service and sacrifice. We thank our heroes and their families for showing us the true face of commitment to our country.”

Fisher House will continue its primary mission of constructing and gifting Fisher Houses to at military hospitals and Veterans Affairs hospitals throughout the United States. The next Fisher House is slated to be dedicated next month in Murfreesboro, TN.

Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veteran families an estimated $200 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.
